It seems fitting that for much of the Bones series finale, there were just bones everywhere. Every episode of the show, of course, has a lot of bones, since it’s called Bones , but thanks to the lab exploding, the series finale saw Bones Emily Deschanel wading through thousands of bones, all mixed up and all over the place. There were just so many bones. And for a while, Bones herself had no idea what to do with them.
At the end of last week’s episode, we saw the team discovering that the Jeffersonian was filled with multiple explosives, right before the entire thing exploded, with Booth David Boreanaz , Bones, pregnant Angela Michaela Conlin , and Hodgins T. Thyne all trapped in the lab. If they hadn’t deactivated the one bomb right under the lab, they would have died, but thankfully they all lived.
Bones did suffer an injury, however, and temporarily lost the connection between the two sides of her brain. She knew what the bones were called, but had no idea what any of the bones meant, meaning Bones was without her biggest superpower. Eventually, they did it. Apparently, Kovac had met the dead guy in prison and learned where he grew up, and apparently where he grew up, there was a place Kovac could hide once he got out of prison, so Kovac used the guy to get out and hide, and then he killed the guy.
And Bones figured this out with the dead prisoner’s tooth, because of course she did. That someone turned out to be Kovac’s wife, who was actually Kovac’s sister and not his wife at all!
So…it hit me the other day that I was working under a bit of a misapprehension regarding Booth and Brennan and their romantic relationships with other people. Quick questions: Is Peter the physicist? If so, then great. But he also in a bit of crappy dialogue tells us that Brennan is emotionally distant and cold.
Hart Hanson has always argued that Brennan is not cold, and I agree with him. She does have emotion, and yes, she does keep that emotion locked up at times, but she is not emotionless, and she is not cold.
They aren’t bad just different than Booth and Brennan. B&B are both sort of re-learning the steps to dating, having relied on their surrogate.
Spoilers ahead…. More than one season finale has polarized fans. And yet, we were riveted. He wants to be with her. Right from the beginning…. I know. The first time I watched the scene, I turned on Brennan. He already is a different outcome. The fact is, she has a better chance of keeping him in her life if they remain professional partners only, and she knows it.
I wanted something BIG. As big as episodes. And then I thought of this: two hundred moments that define the show for me. Not every episode is represented, some are referenced more than once, and no doubt, other fans would have different lists. This just happens to be mine.
Find out if ‘Bones’ co-stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz are buddies Brennan and Booth also became the subject of an intense “will-they fans speculating about whether the two would end up getting together.
For 12 seasons, Bones feverishly mixed together every genre it could; the showrunners called it a ” romantic crimedy ,” which is a fancy way of saying “Fox procedural. A recent study concluded that Republicans and Democrats all like Bones , and maybe in the later years you could argue that this is because the show had settled into a neutral middle ground, but in the early years it’s because, and I mean this as a compliment, Bones was all over the place.
I loved it most in those early seasons, when the rom-com elements and the dramatic crimes were still uneasy with each other. The series was an endearingly weird mashup of conflicting ideas trying to work in harmony, a union mirrored in its central couple: Brennan Emily Deschanel , the liberally open-minded scientist with a clinical approach to death, and Booth David Boreanaz , the Catholic FBI agent and former Army Ranger sniper desperate to right his “cosmic balance sheet” by catching murderers.
No matter where Bones went, Booth and Brennan were always there, and although they changed along with the show, their dynamic remained the best part of it. Brennan, who worked as a forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institute a barely fictional Smithsonian , consulted on murder cases with Booth at the FBI. As a pair, the rational, scientific woman and the emotional, intuitive man were so obviously indebted to The X-Files ‘ Scully Gillian Anderson and Mulder David Duchovny , who also directed an episode of Bones that in the pilot Booth just got it out of the way and admitted as much.
But while The X-Files fought tooth and nail against making its core romance explicit, Bones gave in to the sexual tension. Booth and Brennan’s dynamic evolved from bickering to genuine trust to romantic pursuit; then, at the end of the sixth season, Brennan announced that she was pregnant, and that was that.
Bones ran for so many years that it managed to string along its central couple for six full seasons and then air another six seasons of mostly domestic bliss, thumbing its nose at the Moonlighting Curse.
Bones signs off on Tuesday, after 12 seasons of crime solving, evidence examining, blood, guts and, most importantly, bones. From their first episode together, Brennan and Booth’s dynamic was electric, and while the will-they-or-won’t-they of it all took nearly seven seasons to sort out more if you count that they don’t actually tie the knot until season nine , their relationship kept fans hooked for all episodes. We watched Brennan wrestle with her feelings as Booth looked for love, saw them lay it all on the line only to yank it back again, and finally, at long last, got to witness their happy ending.
Two kids and countless hurdles later, they’re still going strong. So, as we say goodbye to Booth and Brennan — and the rest of the beloved “Squint Squad” — here’s a look back at some of the pair’s very best hours together:.
Bones producer Kathy Reichs is writing an episode of the series she inspired. Check out what the On whether or not Brennan and Booth should get together.
However, that happened off-screen, and that was just one aspect of their relationship that didn’t make sense. Booth and Brennan were opposites, in who they were and what they believed, but they had crime-fighting in common. That alone led to much of their banter over the years, both before and after they got together. However, that didn’t make sense when it came to the way the show built their relationship. That meant stalling their relationship over the first several seasons and bringing in other love interests and having them become jealous.
In some ways, the fact that the series was a procedural drama hurt Booth and Brennan’s relationship. The focus wasn’t exclusively on their romance. Sometimes, that didn’t allow for enough time for some conflicts and consequences to play out. However, the road they took didn’t make much sense. Fans waited years to see them together, yet too much of their relationship especially the beginning took place off-screen. Fans sat through six seasons, made up of episodes, waiting for the two main characters to get together.
They saw them each have other love interests and in some cases, they had significant relationships.

It’s been six whole months since we last had new Bones on our screens. now a full-fledged couple who have decided to raise their child together. The question with Booth and Brennan was never “Will they, won’t they?
It’s been nearly a year since I posted my first blog about Bones , and while we’ve had our ups and downs, it’s still my favorite show on TV. Here’s why I liked it so much: I’m the proud platonic lady friend of several guys. They are like brothers to me. Over the past decade or so, we’ve become like family — bickered, cried, whined, celebrated — and never been romantically involved. Our relationships were simply not wired that way. But the love is undeniable. When I started watching Bones , I had never seen such developed lead characters who could have obviously hooked up with each other but didn’t.
In the beginning, Brennan and Booth were professional partners who found complementary parts of each other that enabled them to work together brilliantly and solve the most difficult cases.
